What are medals and missions?

Medals and missions play a crucial role in our assessment process. They are predefined statements that describe the criteria for achievement at each skill level and the path for students to progress to the next level in the skill.

By preparing this feedback in advance and incorporating your experience and understanding of the task into our knowledge base, you essentially document all the feedback you would provide to any student at any level. This means that our application can provide the most impactful and encouraging feedback to students once we determine their level of achievement on each skill.

The medals and missions also act as a guide for the AI to ensure its outputs align with your teaching approach. Medals:

  • Acknowledge a student's achievement of a skill level.

  • Describe what achievement looks like at a particular level.

  • Serve as a form of praise, reinforcing the student's good work.

  • Increase in complexity as the skills become more complex.

  • The more specific the Medal, the better the students understand what they’ve done right.

  • Appear on the Dashboard for the students, where the top three are highlighted.

  • Guide the AI in understanding what good performance looks like and what the teacher values.

  • Are designed to motivate and encourage students by recognizing their progress and accomplishments.

For example, if a student achieves the highest score for spelling, the medal may read: “You consistently used correct spelling throughout your work.”

Missions:

  • Provide constructive feedback to the student on how to improve their skills and reach the next level of achievement.

  • Offer a clear and actionable step for the student to take in order to improve their proficiency in a particular skill.

  • Are tailored to the specific skill level of the student and provide a clear path for their development.

  • Missions are designed with the concept of the 'zone of proximal development' in mind. They provide learning goals that are within the student's reach and can be achieved with sufficient support.

  • Appear on the Dashboard for the students, where they can easily see the steps they need to take to improve.

  • Guide the AI in understanding what improvement looks like and what steps the student needs to take to improve.

  • Are designed to motivate and encourage students by providing a clear and achievable goal for their progress.

For example, if a student achieves the lowest score for spelling, the mission may read: “In the future, please try to check your work for spelling mistakes.”
